Kept in Service is an independent editorial desk on the desktop and laptop computer. It is written for the person who owns the machine on the desk, for the person who equips a small office, and for the person deciding whether a machine that has already had one owner is worth a second one.
What an entry contains
Each entry takes exactly one question about a personal computer. The answer comes first, in the opening paragraphs, before any background. What follows is written so a reader can jump to the part they need: what the number on a specification sheet means, what to measure, what is normal, what is not.
The sources are named at the end of the entry. They are the manufacturer documentation, the published standards, the operating system documentation and the repair literature. Where a source does not settle a question, the entry says so instead of guessing.
The number and the date
An entry is numbered inside its section, so a reference such as MC-002 belongs to the second entry filed under the machines. It is dated with the day it was last checked, not the day it was first written. That date orders the front page, dates the item in the feed and appears in the sitemap.
